eco travel angst

By admin | July 5, 2007

it has been far too many years since I’ve had a real vacation, one that is not a few days extra at the front or back of a business trip. I’m talking about a real vacation, like I used to have before starting a business of my own. Scheduling to be away from the office, getting on a plane with no files, no meetings to dress for, nothing but recharging my drained batteries…

So I’ve commited to the first week of August and now comes the decision of where to go. I need to leave the country my mind says, I want a language barrier to hide behind, to generate my own little isolation bubble that I can walk around with and truly not understand what is going on… So being the ecoist I am I Googled “eco travel” and got 13.3 millionĀ  results in .09 seconds, wow seems there is a lot of good clean travel to be had these days. Now I’m not looking to see baby tree frogs in a remote jungle, I just want to put my hard earned cash into a travel dossier and a hotelier that has like minded goals for the planet. I’m not interested in a penny going towards organizations that don’t get it yet or that are activley contribnuting to the further desimation of Earth.

Next I established a radius from my home of how long I am willing to fly and filtered my Google results to destinations that fall within that time perimeter. Top results: Mexico, Belize and Canada. Canada is out as they speak english (although I love the country and the accent) so it is Central America. I tried a few of the page one results including ecotravel which provides an excellent filtering tool, enter your destination target area, add criteria like activities sought, special interest, spiritual desires and other then click and your results appear. All resulting destinations have all been prequalified for compliance with eco principles and list the efforts made by each in creating an eco-sensitive destination.

Still going through it all, selection soon as I need to leave in a month.
